When we talk about teaching kids to read, we often focus on the mechanics: phonics, sight words, comprehension. But what often gets left out of that conversation is the simple fact that reading should be fun. Kids who enjoy reading are far more likely to grow into lifelong readers. And while there are countless resources out there for teaching basic literacy skills, fewer focus specifically on making reading enjoyable. That’s where litfun us comes in.
The site has been around for over a decade, and it occupies a strange middle ground between a dusty old educational resource site and flashy modern apps like Duolingo. This is both its strength and its weakness. There’s no app for phones or tablets; you’ll find no gamified learning or flashy animations. Instead, it offers downloadable PDFs full of stories, poems and riddles designed to make kids smile as they learn.
The difference between teaching kids to read and teaching them to love reading
Most parents understand why math dare-to-8 problems get worse in middle school years or why science curriculums suddenly get harder when kids reach high school – as they take on more abstract thinking, teachers amp up the difficulty accordingly. What most parents don’t quite notice is that their kid’s interest in reading often flatlines somewhere between the end of early elementary and middle school – just after they’ve already mastered the basics without really understanding why they’re doing so.
The thing about becoming good at something is that eventually you get good at it–you correctly pronounce most words you encounter by fifth grade. But just because you can do something doesn’t mean it still holds your attention or brings joy. When was the last time someone actually taught your child about how fun reading books could be? Or studied poetry and limericks with them? How long have you devoted to helping your child spend time thinking about stories?
What makes litfun org different from other sites
litfun us isn’t flashy. Unlike many edtech platforms today (including some terrible sites) that might brag about “employee engagement” scores or “outcomes,” litfun sketches itself as “an online archive of out-of-copyright children’s books.” Its homepage looks like any library website from 1998, but dig deeper into its offerings and you’ll discover tons of original material created by literacy experts specifically for this site.
All materials are free to download not behind a paywall — none of this three-unlock premium pay-tills garbage-flexible subscription plans–and are available as PDFs which run right in any browser or printer without requiring users unlock those premium unlock-locks like too many otherwise similar learning resources.
- Ages 3-5 are introduced through picture books with puzzles built around rhyming schemes (such as “Whale Waves”)
- Ages 6-8 introduce more advanced themes like Dr Seuss-style verse poetry (as seen in Mary Lipton’s “The Tall Man”)
- Ages 9-12 finally provide hard-hitting comic-style storytelling adventures rooted deeply within fairytale narratives–but now through stuff young readers enjoy more than serious literature (like Stuffy Stuffy’s Backwards Day)
